Foxen
“Auri's soft blue-green alchemical light”
also known as the green coin
Appearance§
Foxen is a small object that emits a soft, faintly glowing blue-green or cerulean light, dim enough that it merely reveals the pale shape of an arm in the dark. It resembles foxfire or a steady glow-stick rather than a burning flame, appearing like an ember slightly larger than a coin. Auri holds it cupped within her two hands and keeps it resting in a small dish, into which a single drop from a bottle is added to make it brighten. Its sweet cerulean tint is gentle, casting no jerking shadows and instead warming and softening other light sources nearby.
Description§
Foxen is the name Auri gives to her personal light source in The Slow Regard of Silent Things. Rather than a flame, it produces a soft blue-green, cerulean glow, and is a product of alchemy. Auri keeps Foxen in a small dish on her bedshelf in the Underthing and activates it by letting a single drop fall from a dropper bottle into the dish, after which it slowly brightens into a faint glowing blue. She also carries it cupped in her hands. Its light softens the yellow flame of her spirit lamp so that a room is warmed without frantic shadows clawing at the walls. Kvothe first glimpses this light in The Name of the Wind but is too tactful to press Auri about it.
