Denna Walking Into the Waystone Will Snap Kote Back Into Kvothe

fringe prophecy · popularity 276 · 1 source thread

Denna arriving at the Waystone on the third day is the catalyst that reawakens Kvothe from his Kote persona.

About: Denna, Kvothe

Also involves: Waystone Inn, Chronicler, Bast

The theory§

The theory proposes that Denna will walk into the Waystone Inn on the third day of the framing narrative and that her arrival is what reawakens Kvothe from the dulled Kote persona. The reasoning rests on her two roles in his life: she is the one person who always seems to find him no matter how far he travels, and she first set him thinking about the power of a changed name. On meeting again they would resume their old ritual of pretending not to know each other, trading the clipped seven-word sentences that have always served as their private recognition signal, before her presence forces him to reclaim his true self. The counter-reasoning is substantial: Denna is widely presumed dead by the time of the frame, the Chronicle reads as a long apology addressed to her, and Kvothe may already be awake—playing Kote deliberately as part of a trap—meaning no one needs to wake him at all. A competing view holds that music, which moves him and which he now refuses to play, is the truer catalyst.

Evidence§

  • Who's the one person that could snap Kote out of character and back into himself fully, as Kvothe? Who taught him about changing his name in the first place? Who's the one person that always seems to find him, no matter how far he travels?
OP's core argument: Denna fits every criterion for the one who could reawaken Kvothe.u/Bergieexclamationpt
  • Denna is going to walk into the Waystone Inn on Day 3.
The central prediction of the theory.u/Bergieexclamationpt
  • They'll have one of their conversations where they pretend not to know each other. They'll speak in 7-word sentences.
Their private recognition ritual would play out on meeting again.u/Bergieexclamationpt
  • But she's the only one who could possibly shake him out of this role he's sunken into playing.
OP concludes Denna alone can break the Kote persona.u/Bergieexclamationpt
  • Can't work if Denna is dead, as most suspect
CounterCounter: the theory fails if Denna is already dead by the frame.u/Plantatnalp
  • Nothing needs to wake Kote/Kvothe up. He's not hiding, he has set a trap.
CounterCounter: Kvothe is already awake, playing Kote deliberately as part of a trap.u/walletinsurance
  • Music moves him and he refuses to play. I think if he were to play again this would wake up his sleeping mind again as it always has
CounterCompeting catalyst: music, not Denna, is the truer trigger.u/Dracks0n
  • the chronicle itself is a giant apology to denna, since hell no longer be here
Context: the frame reads as an apology to Denna, supporting a tragic reading.u/Nawa-shi
