Kote May Already Be Dead, Kept Alive by Sheer Force of Will
Kvothe may have actually died and is held in the living world by his extraordinary Alar, mirroring how the Barrow King returned from death.
Also involves: Sympathy, Folly, Caesura, Haliax
The theory§
This theory proposes that Kote is literally dead and held in the living world only by an act of will strong enough to override mortality, paralleling the way the Barrow King is said to have returned from death — not through necromancy, but through pure, simple will, being too great a king for a little death to claim. Kvothe's repeatedly demonstrated, sometimes terrifying Alar makes him a plausible heir to that feat even in his student years. The reading explains two persistent puzzles: Kote never demonstrably uses sympathy, because his entire Alar is consumed in the effort of remaining alive (Bast's 'don't ask why he doesn't use it' is read as a deflection from this truth), and Kote is described as a man waiting to die, which fits one whom death has already technically claimed. The presence of Folly rather than Caesura above the bar is taken as a sign Kvothe underwent a genuine death event and returned his Adem sword as custom demands after death. The theory situates Kvothe alongside Lanre/Haliax — power drawing the dead back, the unsleeping immortal who cannot truly die — and notes it would explain why the skin dancer does not possess him.
Evidence§
Pat descibed the way the Barrow king returned from the dead as nothing to do with necromancy, but a pure and simple act of will. He was one of, if not the greatest king that world has ever known and it would take more than a little death to kill him.
OP's foundational precedent: death overcome by pure will, the model Kvothe could mirror. — u/HousebreadKvothe has in nearly countless ways shown himself to have an exceptionally strong will. On occasion an even terrifyingly strong one.
Establishes Kvothe as plausible heir to the Barrow King's feat. — u/Housebreadthere is not a single irrefutable instance of kote using sympathy. However, there is an instance of Bast saying "dont ask why he doesnt use it." … And If every bit of his Alar was being used to keep him from dying... He would be hard pressed to perform even the simplest sympathy.
Explains Kote's missing sympathy: his whole Alar is consumed staying alive. — u/Housebreadthe commentary later describes kote as a man who looked as though he was waiting to die. … If he Actually died, and was brought back by his own will he may not fully understand why or how, and may be expecting death to come for him at any moment.
Kote's death-waiting demeanor fits one death has already claimed. — u/HousebreadKvothe stated that Caesura would be returned to the Adem upon his death. … We do know that Folly, is not Ceasura.
Folly over the bar implies a real death event triggered the sword's return. — u/Housebreadlanre just returning to life because power drawing him back, it repeats with kvote.
Comment reinforces the Lanre/Haliax parallel of power drawing the dead back. — u/EarthWasTakenI wonder if it explains why the skin dancer doesn't posses Kote/Kvothe. If he has already died maybe that means the skin dancer is incapable of possessing him or perhaps recognizes someone who is dead and surviving through force of will.
Adds new evidence: the skin dancer not possessing Kote fits his being already dead. — u/NoblePotatoeBut the second quotation seems to imply that even at this fairly late date in the frame story, Kvothe isn't planning to return from 'beyond the doors of stone.' … This is no fable where folk come back from the dead.
CounterCounter: Kvothe explicitly says this is no fable where folk come back from the dead. — u/PA55w0rdSkept1c
