Why Kvothe No Longer Plays Music at the Waystone Inn

plausible motive · popularity 70 · 1 source thread

Something in Book 3, perhaps Denna's fate, made Kvothe abandon music and sympathy in his innkeeper exile.

About: Kvothe

Also involves: Denna, Waystone Inn, Newarre, Sympathy, The Chandrian, The Adem, The Moon

The theory§

In his exile as the innkeeper Kote at the Waystone Inn, Kvothe no longer plays music and no longer works sympathy, a silence that visibly grieves Bast. The roots of this withdrawal are foreshadowed in The Wise Man's Fear: while Denna is missing, Kvothe struggles to compose for the Maer, suggesting his art is bound up with her. Several lines of reasoning converge on his hands: he cuts himself unawares while making a holly crown, hides his hands in towels when angry, and keeps them constantly busy as though concealing a tremor or injury, hinting at a maiming during the betrayal or the act that breaks his sword. Other readings hold that the silence is deliberate concealment from something that listens, that he has Changed his own name and severed that part of himself, or that as a newly made Chandrian his sign is silence and the third silence belongs to him. The competing explanations all rest on the same canon fact: the broken man at the Waystone has set down both his music and his magic.

Evidence§

  • it appears Kvothe has trouble coming up with music for the Mayor during the time Denna is missing. Now coming back to the Inn Kvothe doesn't play at all anymore nor does he practice Sympathy. I'm curious if something happened to Denna possibly in the Doors of Stone that would make Kvothe stop playing music all together.
OP's core claim: his lost art tracks Denna's absence, hinting something happened to her.u/storkmister
  • Seems like he has issues with his hands though. He practically stab’s himself when he’s making his holly crown and doesn’t notice at first. And then when he gets angry he hides his hand in towels. Plus he’s always busying them like he’s trying to hide the shakes or something
Refines theory: the cause may be damaged hands, not just grief.u/ConsortByNew
  • I’m in the camp that his hand or hands have been damaged, probably during the betrayal or the fight that has him ‘kill an angel. ’ … his obsession over the health of his hands feels very Chekov’s Gunny.
Develops the hand-injury reading, tying it to the betrayal or sword-breaking fight.u/luckydrunk_7
  • what if something is *listening*? After all, the one time he gets outted, it's because he led a round of Tinker Tanner at his inn.
Alternative: silence is deliberate concealment from something that listens.u/taborlyn13
  • He could have “changed his name” and changed that part of himself. He talked to Elodin about it in NotW when talking about Denna, and Elodin panicked a bit.
Alternative: he Named/Changed himself, severing his music.u/ProtectionSimilar151
  • He is a new Chandrian and his sign is silence. The third silence is always said to belong to him.
Alternative: the silence is his Chandrian sign.u/Viperbunny
  • in the beginning of NotW, when the caravan comes through, Rothfuss states that Kvothe joined in singing and sang more verses than anyone had ever heard.
CounterCounter: he does still sing, undercutting the total-silence premise.u/GeminiLife
  • It seemed more like he found a couple of new things that interested him (that ass and real magic), and he didn't need to busk for his living anymore.
CounterCounter: a mundane explanation, not trauma or maiming.u/Skybreakeresq
