Present-Day Kvothe May Already Be Dead, Sustained by Bast's Grammarie

fringe identity · popularity 149 · 1 source thread

Kote could be a magical dummy of the dead Kvothe, kept animate by Bast's grammarie at the Waystone.

About: Kvothe, Bast, Grammarie

Also involves: Waystone Inn, Chronicler

The theory§

This theory speculates that the present-day Kvothe is already dead, and that the Kote tending the Waystone Inn is a construct kept animate by Bast's grammarie, with Bast drawing visitors, thugs, and the Chronicler to the inn in an effort to further actualize a replacement for the master he could not let go. A more grounded reframing reads it less literally: by relentlessly pretending to be a dead nobody, Kvothe is slowly killing the self he once was. This leans on the recurring image of 'the patient, cut-flower sound of a man who is waiting to die,' on Kote's insistence that being thought dead is 'the whole point' because people do not look for the dead, and on his own warning about how thin the line is between the truth and a compelling lie. A related variant supposes Kote is animate only by the force of his own will or alar, which would consume the capacity that leaves him unable to work sympathy.

Evidence§

  • Survived only by some form of Bast’s grammarie. Bast keeps calling thugs and author to this Inn, in an attempt to strengthen and further actualize his magical project: a dummie of the master he couldn’t let go.
OP's core claim: dead Kvothe sustained as Bast's grammarie construct.u/TheGrapeRaper
  • The Waystone in is just an attempt to keep a low profile while he nurtures this creation
OP explains the inn as cover for Bast's project.u/TheGrapeRaper
  • 'It was the patient, cut-flower sound of a man **who is waiting to die.'**
Book quote offered as textual support that Kvothe is dying.u/Kael_Denna
  • “That’s the whole point.** People don’t look for you when you’re dead.
Kote's stated reason to be thought dead reinforces the death motif.u/Kael_Denna
  • you of all people should realize how thin the line is between the truth and a compelling lie.”
Book line: pretending to be dead can become true.u/Kael_Denna
  • By pretending he is dead, Kvothe is slowly dying.
Grounded reframe: the death is metaphorical self-erasure, not literal grammarie.u/Kael_Denna
  • a much more interesting possibility (still wacky) is that he is using his alar to will himself alive despite being dead, and this takes all of his alar, so he can't use sympathy. PAT said the king behind the 4 plated door is a draugur who kepts himself alive be the sheer power of his will
Variant: self-willed animation via alar, explaining lost sympathy.u/Rucs3
  • I mean there was a theory that Iax was created by the Shapers. But I don’t think Bast has that ability.
CounterCounter: doubts Bast is capable of such creation.u/No-BrowEntertainment
