Cyphus
“The Chandrian who bears the blue flame, first named in the song”
also known as Cyphus bears the blue flame, King Scyphus, Scyphus
Appearance§
Cyphus's defining visual marker is the blue flame that surrounds and attends him, causing ordinary fires, hearths, and torches to burn blue, likened to a coal-gas flame. As one of the Chandrian he is bound to Haliax and shares their nature of bearing a tell-tale sign they have learned to conceal. No settled description of his face or form is given.
Description§
Cyphus is one of the seven Chandrian, named first in their rhyme: 'Cyphus bears the blue flame.' His sign is blue fire, which the lore links to firedamp or coal-gas flames like the lamps of Anilin, and which appears at the scenes of Chandrian attacks alongside the other signs, such as rusting iron and rotting wood at the Mauthen farm. In the old tales of Taborlin the Great, the sorcerer who imprisons Taborlin is named 'Wizard-king Scyphus,' a spelling close to Cyphus. When telling such tales, Kvothe subtly alters the Chandrian's names, using 'Scyphus' for Cyphus as he uses 'Ferula' for Ferule, because he avoids their true, deep names. Like the other Chandrian, Cyphus was once tied to one of the seven betrayed cities and bears his sign as a curse-like marker, a tell he has grown skilled at hiding.
