Fae magic of making things seem

also known as Glammourie

Appearance§

Glamourie has no fixed form of its own and is recognised only through the perceptions it shapes. Bast appears as an ordinary, graceful young man until his glamourie slips, at which point Chronicler sees his true Fae shape, including goat-like legs. Its products look entirely natural to mortals, who simply perceive what the glamourie presents, registering nothing amiss unless they possess naming sight. It works as a layer laid over reality, altering how a thing is seen without altering what it is.

Description§

Glamourie is a Fae magic that Felurian defines to Kvothe as "the art of making things seem," the counterpart to grammarie, "the art of making things be." It governs illusion and altered perception, presenting a chosen appearance over reality without changing the underlying thing. Bast relies on glamourie to pass as human, disguising his goat legs and other Fae features beneath the form of an ordinary young man. The illusion is not absolute: Chronicler, a namer, repeatedly sees through Bast's glamourie to his true shape. In The Lightning Tree, Bast teaches a town child about both glamourie and grammarie, explaining the difference between seeming and being. The magic produces effects mortals perceive as wholly natural, so an observer notices nothing amiss unless possessed of naming sight.
