The Fae
“A Shaped otherworld where time runs strangely and named things were made to be”
also known as Fae, Faen, Faen Realm, Fairy, the Fae lands
Appearance§
The Fae is a place of perpetual twilight, half-light bordered and entered through grey standing stones that function like doors into another world. In Felurian's domain it is lush and dreamlike, all twilight eyes, cushions, and sensual abundance, with the moon visibly tied to its sky. In the Fae the stars differ from the mortal sky and the time of day shifts with the direction one travels. Faen beings appear human-like but uncanny, mercurial and beautiful; Bast in his true form is markedly less human than the man at the inn, his goatish legs hidden by glamour. Native Fae magic is visual and tactile, glamourie and grammarie weaving shadow into things, as with Kvothe's shaed.
Description§
The Fae, or Faen Realm, is a world separate from the mortal Four Corners, inhabited by long-lived Faen beings and reached through certain standing stones, especially greystones stacked to form a gate. Time runs differently there, so a visitor's stay may correspond to far more or far less mortal time; Kvothe returns from what feels like a long span with Felurian after only a few mortal days, yet comes back with a full beard. The realm was made by the Shapers and did not exist from the beginning; Felurian recounts that the Namers pooled their power to weave the Fae as a single tapestry, a world with its own sky, and that war broke out only after one of them stole the moon. Its native arts are grammarie, the art of making things be, and glamourie, the art of making things seem, both distinct from mortal sympathy. The Cthaeh, a malevolent oracle bound to a tree, dwells in the Fae, and every Fae knows its nature. Felurian takes Kvothe into the Fae and becomes his lover; he survives, names her by singing her name in four hard notes, and returns subtly changed and touched by fae, a quality that fades over time. Bast is a young Faen prince, Bastas, son of Remmen, Prince of Twilight and the Telwyth Mael, about 150 years old yet still young by Faen standards. The Fae are creatures of passion, and iron harms them on contact.
