Kvothe the Unweaver: Why He Can't Tie Knots and What He Will Undo
Naming and shaping are opposites; Kvothe's failure to tie knots marks him as an unweaver who will unravel the Fae's woven fabric.

The theory§
Naming and shaping are framed as opposed disciplines. Naming works only with the existing forces of reality and creates nothing new, whereas shaping, the art of the most powerful ancient namers, weaves wholly new things into being, including aspects of the Fae and objects that cannot be destroyed by ordinary means. The books cast shaping repeatedly in the imagery of knotwork and weaving: Felurian calls the Fae a single woven tapestry, the Yllish keep their lore in knots, and unbreakable shaped objects are tied into existence. Against this, Kvothe's recurring inability to tie knots, dramatised in the dream where Abenthy fails to teach him sailors' knots, is reframed as the inverse gift, an innate talent for unweaving and untying what has been shaped. The theory predicts Kvothe will inadvertently unravel shaped constructs, perhaps part of the Fae itself, and, unable to re-tie what he has undone, will spend part of his own name to seal away the damage, which would account for his diminished frame-story state and the rumour of shattered, unmendable stones at the site of a great catastrophe.
Evidence§
Some namers became so powerful they knew reality so well that they could mold it into new forms “They knew the fox and the hare and the space in-between the two”. These new things were either aspects of Fae, or objects that could not be destroyed by conventional means
OP defines shaping as creating new, near-indestructible things, setting up what Kvothe will undo. — u/Broken_DiagramFelurian mentions that the Fae “Was woven as a single tapestry.” We see her using shaping magic to make Kvothes shaed and it is vividly described as a kind of weaving action.
Establishes the weaving/tapestry imagery linking shaping to woven fabric. — u/Broken_DiagramAnything woven is nothing more than a system of intricate knots.
Bridges weaving to knots, the crux equating shaped things with knotwork. — u/Broken_DiagramIn Kvothe’s dream sequence after his parents are killed Abenthy tries to teach him complicated sailors knots but Kvothe cannot replicate them. … When Kvothe is recounting his return from Vintas he says “The sailors tried to teach me how to tie their knots. I couldn’t manage it but I was a dab had at UNTIEING them
Core evidence: Kvothe can't tie knots, only untie them, marking him an unweaver. — u/Broken_DiagramKvothe will learn he is really good at undoing/unweaving shaped magic. … He will start with the Loeclos Box and then unweave the entire Fae (the Cathae included) by mistake … He will regret this mistake so much he will use part of his own name (he cant tie knots so he can't re-shape the Fae) to attempt to seal away whatever he unleashed by untying all those knots.
OP's central prediction: Kvothe unravels shaped things, then spends his name to seal the damage. — u/Broken_DiagramKvothe's specialty being un-making would also tie in well with the rumours of the shattered, un-mendable stones mentioned by the gentleman who recognized Kvothe at the Waystone.
Comment adds the shattered unmendable stones as further support for the unmaking gift. — u/doublepistolsandwinkI don’t believe that to have been shaping. Felurian calls it Grammarie: … I think that grammarie is a magic similar to shaping exclusively used by the Fae. The only occasion of shaping I believing we have seen is in Slow Regard.
CounterCounter: the shaed weaving was grammarie, not shaping, weakening that piece of evidence. — u/Nisheeth_PActually nothing about Naming vs. Shaping comes from Kvothe's conversation with Felurian. Felurian spoke to Kvother about people she called the old knowers at one point, and old name-knowers at another point. She never uses the word namer or naming.
CounterCounter: corrects OP's terminology; Felurian never says namer, only knowers. — u/aerojockey

Tier reasoning§
distinct theory; plausible fits — grounded in real shaping/weaving quotes but prediction is speculative
