The Amyr
“An ancient order dedicated to the greater good at any cost”
also known as Ciridae, Knights of the Order Amyr
Appearance§
The Amyr are an order rather than an individual, distinguished chiefly by the marks of their highest rank. The Ciridae bear red tattoos upon their hands and arms that resemble blood, and are held to be terrible to look upon. In Skarpi's account, Aleph's white fire settles on the foreheads of the first Amyr like silver stars. Nina's vase depicts a lone Ciridae standing before a tower wrapped in flame, with the names of the angels Andan and Ordal painted weighing upon his shoulders.
Description§
The Amyr are an ancient order whose defining creed is to do the terrible things others cannot, in service of the greater good. By Skarpi's account, the order was founded by Selitos One-Eye after the fall of Myr Tariniel: refusing Aleph's gift so that he might remain in the world, Selitos drew the faithful Ruach to him and pledged to confound the plots of Lanre and the Chandrian, naming the order to remember the lost city. In Skarpi's tale, Aleph wreathes the first Amyr in white fire that settles upon their foreheads like silver stars, making them righteous, wise, and terrible to behold. Within the order, the Ciridae form the highest and most unbound rank, held above reproach in whatever they do and marked by red tattoos upon their hands and arms. Sir Savien Traliard was the greatest of the Amyr, immortalized in the tragic Lay of Sir Savien Traliard; he spent six years with the order, three proving himself and three in training, before returning in the seventh year. The order's consequentialist ethos is embodied by the Duke of Gibea, an Amyr baron whose horrific vivisections caused enormous suffering yet yielded medical knowledge credited with saving many lives. In later ages the Amyr served as church knights, the strong right hand of the Aturan Empire, until they were disbanded roughly three hundred years before Kvothe's time when that empire collapsed. The order is known as the bloody-handed, and the Chandrian are said to fear it. Records of the Amyr have been deliberately scrubbed from the histories and the Archives, leaving only fragmentary traces; Kvothe concludes the Amyr themselves removed the information, meaning the order still exists and acts in secret. The Cthaeh tells Kvothe that the Maer keeps the Amyr close at hand and will lead him to their door.
