Viari, a scarred Amyr acquisitor under Lorren, killed both Kvothe's troupe and the Mauthens at Trebon.

About: Viari, The Amyr

The theory§

This theory identifies Viari, the scarred acquisitions agent working under Master Lorren, as the lone Amyr who killed both Kvothe's troupe and the Mauthens at Trebon. Viari bears pale scars across his knuckles and up his arms, evoking the bloody-handed Ciridae of the Amyr; he knows Edema Ruh formalities and uses the phrase 'our family,' the very words Kvothe later uses to slip past the defenses of Alleg's false troupe; and he carries a long knife and a sword, matching the Mauthen massacre described as 'knife and sword work.' Kvothe's slaughter of Alleg's troupe, in which Alleg is left belly-cut and crawling exactly as Arliden was, is read as a symbolic mirror of how a single Amyr destroyed his own family. Viari works for Lorren, himself suspected to be Amyr and to be purging the Archives of dangerous history; Lorren's startled recognition of Arliden's name at Kvothe's admission is explained as Lorren having dispatched Viari once word of Arliden's song spread. The acquisitions office keeps a map of Temerant and investigates 'rumors,' lending bitter irony to Kvothe's cover story of investigating rumors in Trebon, since the University truly did send an agent there.

Evidence§

  • I think Kvothe killing Alleg's (alleg-ory) troupe symbolizes the truth about how a lone Amyr killed Kvothe's troupe, in part because both Alleg and Arliden are specifically said to be left belly cut and crawling.
OP's core claim: Kvothe's slaughter of Alleg mirrors a lone Amyr killing his troupe.u/chainsawx72
  • Viari is that 'lone Amyr'. He has scars on his hands, aka bloody-handed. He knows Ruh formalities, and says 'our family', the same phrase Kvothe uses to get past the false troupe's defenses. Viari carries a long knife and a sword, and the Mauthen massacre was said to be 'knife and sword work'. He works directly for Lorren, an Amyr.

  • highlighting a few pale scars that ran over his knuckles and up his arms.
Book detail OP cites: Viari's scars evoke the bloody-handed Ciridae.u/chainsawx72
  • He stepped forward and held out his hand to me. “One family.”
Viari uses the Ruh password Kvothe later uses to disarm Alleg's troupe.u/chainsawx72
  • Interesting as well because Loren knew about Arliden at the very least when Kvothe goes through admissions. He asks specifically “Arliden the bard?” when kvothe says his full name. Could be that he knows Arliden bc he sent Viari to handle it when they started to hear about the song he was working on.
Comment adds evidence: Lorren's recognition of Arliden's name supports dispatch theory.u/Proper-Adeptness9435
  • If the university is secretly an Amyr stronghold, and Kvothe finds out they were responsible for his parent's murder. would he not burn the whole place to the ground? Chronicler still attended after Kvothe leaves, and speaks about Elodin, nothing to indicate anything major has taken place there.
CounterCounter: frame-story behavior is inconsistent with Kvothe knowing the University killed his family.u/TacticalDo
  • One explanation I've seen for the farm is that scrael killed them. Their legs would look like "sword and knife work".
CounterCounter: scrael, not Viari, could explain the 'knife and sword' Mauthen wounds.u/Katter
  • The gut cut reference -- sure the other guy could have been alive for days, but Kvothes father was dead when he came back after playing in the woods -- maybe a few hours, not days....timelines dont add up
CounterCounter: Arliden died within hours, not the slow death the Alleg parallel implies.u/PotentialMacaron6613
