Master Lorren
“The cold, watchful Master Archivist of the University”
also known as Lorren, Master Archivist
Appearance§
Lorren is a notably tall, austere figure who wears the dark robes of a University master. He is formal and reserved in bearing, with an unreadable, impassive face, and conveys an aura of restrained power. He is consistently cold, watchful, and quiet, showing little or no emotion.
Description§
Master Lorren is the cold, watchful Master Archivist who governs the University Archives and controls access to their contents. At Kvothe's admissions interview he recognises the name Arliden, asking whether Kvothe is the son of Arliden the Bard and which troupe he travelled with, and he personally retrieves the book that proves Kvothe studied under an arcanist, securing his admission. Lorren is devoted above all to preserving the books: he forbids open flame within the Archives, is the only person permitted to bring fire inside, and reacts with sharp anger when Kvothe is caught carrying a candle in the stacks, banning him from the Archives over the incident in Tomes. He repeatedly steers Kvothe away from his research into the Chandrian and the Amyr, striking out Kvothe's recorded question about the Amyr in the ledger and warning that not all at the University respect such curiosity. He confiscates the Duke of Gibea's journal bearing the words 'Ivare enim euge,' and during examinations questions Kvothe on the Mender heresies. Lorren employs gillers and acquisition scouts, including Viari, who range across the Four Corners tracking rumours of rare books, their positions recorded in red grease pencil. Throughout his appearances he maintains an almost unbroken serious, emotionless demeanour.
