The theory§

Master Lorren, the Master Archivist of the University, is proposed to be a covert member of the Amyr who uses his control of the Archives to gather and suppress all evidence of the Amyr and the Chandrian. The Archives hold no surviving material on the Amyr, and Lorren personally summons Kvothe to question his search for Chandrian and Amyr information before later banning him entirely; he twice confiscates dangerous books, including the Duke of Gibea's journal bearing the Amyr motto 'Ivare enim euge.' Because the Chandrian's own goal is to erase proof of their existence, Lorren's pruning of the same knowledge places him at the heart of a secrecy operation. The Four-Plate Door, the most secure vault in the Archives, is offered as the place the Amyr lock such truths away, with its inscription 'Valaritas' read as a cognate of Latin 'veritas' (truth) and structurally compared to the Loeclos Box, which 'may be something that locks away.' An alternative version casts Puppet, the candle-lit recluse who lives in the Archives, as the true Amyr and Lorren and prior Master Archivists as his human assistants.
