The strange, puppet-carving hermit who lives deep in the Archives

Appearance§

Puppet is an old, strange recluse who dwells in a deep underground chamber of the Archives, near the four-plate door, surrounded by books and hand-carved puppets and lit by candle flames. He is most often shown seated and whittling marionettes, a small drift of pale wood shavings gathering around his hands, shaving thin strips of wood while studying the faces of those before him. His manner is childlike, perceptive, and unnervingly knowing.

Description§

Puppet is an eccentric hermit who lives deep within the University's Archives, in a chamber crowded with books and the marionettes he carves by hand. A scriv permitted by Master Lorren to dwell among the stacks, he keeps the only live fire allowed inside the Archives, his room lit by candle flames despite the surrounding fire risk. Wilem and Simmon introduce Kvothe to him during The Wise Man's Fear, and Puppet greets the newcomer with an unsettling exchange, claiming not to know him and remarking that Kvothe seems too certain of who he is. He dubs Kvothe a 'looker,' teasing that he is forever looking but never truly seeing, and reads Kvothe's expression closely as he whittles. Puppet stages pointed little marionette shows, including one depicting a Tehlin priest committing violence against a child, and speaks with surprising authority about the Amyr and the Church, observing that Emperor Nalto could not have commanded the Amyr to cross the street, implying the Church rather than the Emperor held their leash. He draws a sharp distinction between merely watching and truly seeing, declaring himself a see-er, the meaning behind the University rank E'lir, and tells Kvothe he is not truly a Re'lar even after Kvothe has been formally raised to that rank. He appears only in a short sequence before vanishing from the narrative, asking Wilem and Simmon to bring Kvothe back to him.
