Simmon
“Kvothe's warm-hearted, alchemy-studying best friend at the University”
also known as Sim
Appearance§
Simmon is fair, sandy- and light-haired, and boyish, with what Kvothe calls a cherubic face. In the passage describing the three young friends he is the 'light' one, set against 'dark' Wilem and 'fiery' Kvothe. His youthful, open features match his temperament: he is the friend most quickly moved to emotion, his face easy to read. His noble lineage implies well-made clothing.
Description§
Simmon, called Sim, is one of Kvothe's two closest friends at the University, paired throughout with the Cealdish Wilem; the three are inseparable companions. He studies alchemy and Eld Vintic poetry, and has a noted interest in faeries and 'piksies.' Sim comes from Vintish nobility, heir to a noble house in the Small Kingdoms, and knows the peerage well enough to correct Kvothe matter-of-factly about Ambrose's rank, reeling off the royal family, prince regents, Maer Alveron, Duchess Samista, and the Lacklesses. He is gentle, good-natured, warm, and easily moved to emotion, remembered as a near-perfect friend; the worst he ever does is bet against Kvothe in friendly arguments over who disbanded the Amyr and the age of the standing stones. Denna calls him 'a boy splashing in a brook,' set against Wilem as 'a stone in deep water.' He weeps after hearing Kvothe perform the Lay of Sir Savien Traliard at the Eolian, the night Kvothe wins his talent pipes. As an alchemist he devises a 'second skin' heat shield that burns away before the wearer's skin is harmed. After Kvothe is whipped and lacks his gram, Sim and Wilem take turns watching over him at night, holding sympathetic protection while he sleeps. By the events of The Wise Man's Fear he has gained a girlfriend, Fela, and grown more confident, though as an Aturan from a more reserved culture he reacts with dismay to learning Fela is Modegan.
