Meluan is pale, cultured, and carries herself with the noble grace and aristocratic poise of a Lackless heiress. Her profile strikes Kvothe so strongly with familiar resemblance that he stares, certain he already knows her. She is dark-haired, with a proud neckline and red lips that need no paint, and bears a strong resemblance to Denna.

Meluan Lackless is a high-ranking Vintish noblewoman and the sole heir of the ancient House Lackless, whose lands lie in the north of Vintas, beyond the effective control of King Roderic. During the events at Severen, Maer Alveron courts her and the two formally pledge troth, uniting his house with one of Vintas's most powerful families and bringing the Lackless inheritance under his keeping. She harbors an intense hatred of the Edema Ruh, which she traces to a sister who ran off with a travelling troupe; Meluan describes this as a kidnapping and speaks bitterly of the shame brought upon the family. She keeps the Lackless box, a smooth wooden box with no visible lid or lock, faintly carved with Yllish-knot-like markings that the Maer cannot feel but Kvothe can. When Kvothe handles the box he notices a faint lemon-like scent. She believes only a handful of people know the box exists, despite a children's rhyme that references it. On first meeting her, Kvothe finds her face strikingly and maddeningly familiar but cannot place why; in profile her resemblance is so strong he feels he already knows her.
