The theory§

This theory reads the Lackless door rhyme as both a record of ancient history and a prophecy of Kvothe's future, casting him as the 'son who brings the blood' of the Iax line. Each of the seven things standing before the Lackless door is mapped onto an element of Kvothe's heritage and coming actions: his unbreakable Edema Ruh circle as the 'ring unworn,' a forsworn name (the moon's, or a Lackless oath to keep the doors shut) as the 'word forsworn,' a moonless night as the 'time that must be right,' and his own Iax-descended blood as the key that breaks the seal. Because Iax stole the moon and is sealed behind the Doors of Stone, opening the box releases the trapped moon and frees Iax and the Shapers, drawing the Fae to mortal ground like a flood and reigniting the Creation War. The 'door that holds the flood' is read as the Doors of Stone themselves, and 'that which comes with sleeping' as the dream, nightmare, or named thing loosed when the seal fails. The reading leans heavily on parsing both the polished Lackless rhyme and the troupers' rougher version side by side, treating Rothfuss's preference for words that carry multiple meanings as license to read each line literally.

Evidence§

  • This children's song tells a tale long past and one yet to come. Of a _son_ of Iax, a lackless, of Kvothe, who will seek his heart's desire, revenge against the Seven, by opening the _lockless box_.
OP's core claim: the Lackless rhyme maps onto Kvothe opening the box.u/TheLastSock
  • He will get his opportunity to open the box by calling in a promise made by Stapes on a _ring unworn_ of bone. And he will use it to _time his approach just right_ by using a moonless night. Under whose cover his thieves lamp will seem to be _without any light_.
Maps ring unworn, the right time, and candle without light onto Kvothe's acts.u/TheLastSock
  • He will draw upon his own _blood_, the line of Iax, who sealed this box long ago, and whose power can open it once more. In doing so he will set free that lady which comes to all while _sleeping_, the moon. And so, like a _flood_, the fae will come finding
Iax blood opens the box, frees the moon, and the fae flood in.u/TheLastSock
  • Felurian mentions that Iax’s stealing the moon caused the Creation war, and I would assume this means the most forsworn word could be the name of the moon.
Second thread ties the forsworn word to the moon's name and the Creation War.u/jculler96
  • Door that holds the flood - The Doors of Stone. E. According to Felurian, Iax is locked behind the doors of stone. Assuming the flood is the shapers.
Reads the flood-door as the Doors of Stone sealing Iax and the shapers.u/jculler96
  • The ring could be the bone ring Lady Lackless gave to Kvothe. He wore it, but you're not supposed to
Refines ring unworn to the bone ring from a Lackless, not Stapes.u/cadioli
  • Thieves lamp is not a candle without light. That's silly, it's just a light he used to steal shit.
CounterCounters the thieves-lamp reading of candle without light.u/GiantPandammonia
  • Word forsworn: I think the Lacklesses made a pact long ago to assist in keeping the doors of stone closed. Since their blood is needed, it would follow that they are breaking their word by trying to open the doors.
Alternative reading: forsworn word is a Lackless oath to keep the doors shut.u/ComputerPresent7486
