The greatest Shaper, who stole the moon and started the Creation War

also known as Iax the Shaper, Jax, Jax the Shaper

Appearance§

In the Jax folk-tale he is an unlucky, joyless boy said to have a drop of faerie blood in him, who tears holes in new shirts and whose heart never knows joy. The canon offers no settled physical portrait, treating him as a near-mythic, half-folklore being known by his deeds rather than his face.

Description§

Iax, folk-named Jax, is the first and greatest of the Shapers and the figure who stole the moon. Before the theft he spoke with the Cthaeh, and his act of taking the moon — capturing only a part of her name and drawing her between two worlds — sparked the Creation War. He is credited with the making of the Fae, which exists set apart from the mortal world. At the war's end he was sealed away behind the Doors of Stone, where he remains imprisoned while Haliax and the other Chandrian roam free. Felurian, who lived around the time he was sealed, names him as the greatest of the Shapers and the one shut behind the doors of stone, and the name Haliax is parsed as Hal-Iax, the Breath of Iax. He is named in the text only twice, by Skarpi and by Bast, and is counted alongside Aleph and Lyra as one of only three whose skill in Names could match Selitos. The children's tale of Jax, told by Hespe, is a folk version of his story: an unlucky boy who meets a listening hermit, obtains a tinker's pack of three sacks, unfolds a crooked house where nothing is true, and uses a box with a tricky knot to capture the moon, failing to open the third sack because he could not listen properly.
