Iax burns behind the four-plate door, the Chandrian are the good guys, and Kvothe unleashes a second Creation War.

The theory§

This sweeping reinterpretation casts the Chandrian as the heroes of the story and the University as both a prison and a vessel-training ground. Its central method is to read the world's children's rhymes, songs, and folk-stories as 'ring around the rosy' encryptions of a single suppressed history — the seven Tehlin angels and Aleph, Selitos tearing pieces of himself to hurl at Lanre, and the Adem's count of eight betrayers rather than seven all treated as fragments of one event. Iax, the Shaper who 'forced reality into new configurations' and stole the moon, is held to still be burning behind the four-plate door Valaritas after a botched attempt to extract the moon's sight, a wound that birthed the Cthaeh. The arc closes with Kvothe accidentally releasing corrupted moon-fragments, making the whole Chronicle a prologue to a second Creation War — fitting Rothfuss's own statement that the trilogy is only a beginning.

Evidence§

  • the key thesis is that all of the kids stories and songs are basically "ring around the rosey" hidden encryptions of the same thing. when you put all the stories together--and some of the names -- you get a (sort of) cohesive story.
OP's core method: children's rhymes and songs encode one suppressed history.u/ursineduck
  • from the church of Tehlu you have the 7 angels, and aleph … you have selitos ripping parts of himself off and throwing them at Lanre … the adem have 8 betrayers instead of 7--the chandrian--who is the 8th?
Cross-source fragments treated as one event; the recurring self-division theme.u/ursineduck
  • Iax was a Shaper—someone who forced reality into new configurations. … He tried to extract the moon's sight. It came out WRONG. … The Cthaeh is the moon's eyes, ripped out badly, trapped in Iax's own box.
Iax's botched extraction birthed the Cthaeh as a wound, not evil.u/ursineduck
  • Lyra called them back. But what returned wasn't them. Empty vessels. … Their signs—rust, rot, cold, silence—are wounds where moonlight used to be. Chandrian = Chandra (Sanskrit for moon) + people. Moon-people. The emptied ones.
Reframes the Chandrian as emptied vessels, their signs as divine wounds.u/ursineduck
  • They bound Iax. Wheel of iron. Eternal fire. Behind what would become the four-plate door. … The fire prohibition isn't about books. Bringing fire near Iax might disrupt the flames keeping him bound.
Iax burns behind the four-plate door; University fire ban protects the binding.u/ursineduck
  • Just like Iax's first attempt created the Cthaeh—mangled, bound, wrong—Kvothe's extraction goes bad. … What emerges: skin-dancers. Corrupted moon-fragments. … The Kingkiller Chronicle is the origin story. The real story hasn't started yet.
Kvothe's botched extraction unleashes corruption, making the trilogy a prequel.u/ursineduck
  • And the part about this being just the origin story tracks. Patrick has said before that KKC was only a prologue.
Commenter corroborates the prequel claim with Rothfuss's own statement.u/Klutzy_Interest5673
  • This is a fun read, but I feel like a ton of things here are either guesses or retcons. Is there an interview or a blog post where Rothfuss gives additional info that would make this theory work?
CounterCounter: much of the chain may be guesswork lacking authorial support.u/SKWAZOFAR
  • Not sure how they'd know the gender
CounterCounter: questions how Netalia could know the unborn child was a boy.u/Sysheen
