Laurian
“Kvothe's mother, the troupe leader's wife widely held to be a runaway Lackless heiress”
also known as Dark Laurian, Kvothe's mother, Netalia Lackless, Tally
Appearance§
Arliden's song describes her with a face like the blade of a knife and a voice like a pricklebrown burr, suggesting a sharp, angular face rather than conventional prettiness. She is remembered chiefly through this song and through Kvothe's grief; little other concrete physical description survives.
Description§
Laurian is Kvothe's mother and the wife of Arliden, leader of the Edema Ruh troupe in which Kvothe was raised. Noble-born before she joined the Ruh, she was lured away from her former life by Arliden's music and words and considered herself married to him without any formal ceremony. She taught Kvothe court etiquette and contributed the best words to Arliden's songs. Arliden wrote a teasing verse about her that opens 'Dark Laurian, Arliden's wife' and plays on her name with the closing line 'Not tally a lot less.' Kvothe recalls visiting family on his mother's side at a place called Three Crossings. In a playful exchange where Arliden jokes about her bedding a wandering god, she describes a man who bound her with kisses and cords of chorded song, noting he lacked red hair. She is killed alongside Arliden and the rest of the troupe in the Chandrian attack Kvothe witnesses as a child.
