An Amyr swordsman cut down Kvothe's family; the Chandrian merely arrived after, and Kvothe wrongly blames them.

The theory§

This theory holds that the Chandrian did not murder Kvothe's troupe; an Amyr did, and Kvothe blames the Seven by mistake. When Kvothe returns to camp he finds the Chandrian seated around his parents' fire as though resting after a meal, and Cinder's remark about a 'little rabbit' is read literally as the catch they had been roasting rather than a taunt about the boy. Haliax's conduct is read as crisis management by bystanders who know they will be blamed: he rebukes the others for petty cruelty and orders Kvothe sent to the soft and painless blanket of his sleep. The actual killing, a slow gut-wound that left Arliden trailing blood for twenty feet, mirrors the wound Kvothe himself later inflicts on Alleg of the false Ruh troupe, whose name puns on 'allegory'; the Alleg episode is treated as the hidden retelling of the massacre, with Kvothe unwittingly reenacting an Amyr's crime. In this reading the Chandrian preserve forbidden history while the Amyr suppress it by force, which is why everyone who knows of the Seven is too afraid to speak: not because the Chandrian punish the telling, but because naming them draws the Amyr. The pattern is extended to the Tarbean scene where Encanis and his follower are blamed for a guard's beating of Kvothe before Tehlu drives them off.

Evidence§

  • I think a lone Amyr killed Kvothe's troupe, like Kvothe kills the false Ruh troupe. Both leaders are left gut sliced and only able to crawl.
OP's core claim: an Amyr, not the Chandrian, killed the troupe, mirroring the Alleg episode.u/chainsawx72
  • My father, his belly cut open, had left a trail of blood for twenty feet.
The slow gut-wound matches the fatal wound Kvothe later gives Alleg.u/chainsawx72
  • the gut wound I’d given him was fatal. I also knew it was a slow death. Slow and painful. With proper care it might be a full span of days before he died.
Alleg/allegory wound paralleled to Arliden's, the hidden retelling of the massacre.u/chainsawx72
  • THEORY: They were roasting rabbits they had just caught. … “Looks like we missed a little rabbit. Careful Cinder, his teeth may be sharp.”
Cinder's 'little rabbit' read literally as roasted catch, not a taunt about the boy.u/chainsawx72
  • You are approaching my displeasure. This one has done nothing. Send him to the soft and painless blanket of his sleep
Haliax rebukes cruelty and spares Kvothe, read as bystanders who fear being blamed.u/chainsawx72
  • Because the Chandrian don't kill you for talking about the Chandrian: the Amyr do. and the Chandrian take the blame. What if the Chandrian's names are a beacon for the Amyr
Refinement: explains why everyone fears naming the Seven—it draws the Amyr.u/Acceptable-Dirt-5228
  • If a lone Amyr killed Kvothe’s troops with the intention of preventing Arliden’s song from leaking, why would they cut open Arliden’s belly for Arliden to slowly die? Someone might have found the troop before Arliden’s death.
CounterCounter: a slow gut-wound is a poor way to suppress a song quickly.u/BrownEyesWhiteScarf
  • there’s almost no chance this is the case. why would the amyr give one single thought to keeping information on the chandrian secret. and the Ctheah tells kvothe the chandrian did things to his mother and Bast said the ctheah never lies
CounterCounter: Cthaeh's never-lying testimony names the Chandrian as the killers.u/Outrageous-Smell-90
