Arliden
“Kvothe's father, an Edema Ruh bard whose song about the Chandrian got his troupe killed”
also known as Kvothe's father
Appearance§
Arliden has dark hair, showing that red hair is not an inherent trait of the Edema Ruh. He is a performer of warm and teasing temperament, dressed as a traveling player and troupe leader.
Description§
Arliden is Kvothe's father, the leader of an Edema Ruh troupe and a gifted bard with a strong musical reputation known even to Master Lorren at the University. The troupe travelled under the name and patronage of a wealthy noble of high standing, Baron Greyfallow, whose name gave them income, reputation, and open doors. Arliden married Netalia of the Lackless line, who took the name Laurian; their elopement was a scandal still circulated in Vintish noble gossip. He composed a teasing song about her ('Dark Laurian, Arliden's wife... not tally a lot less') whose wordplay sounds out her true name, Netalia Lackless. For nearly two years Arliden labored over a single long song, his research drifting from Lanre and Lyra toward the Chandrian; he came to believe he had worked out the reason behind the Chandrian's actions and pressed Abenthy for their names. He sang those names so often while composing that he drew the Chandrian to the troupe, which they slaughtered. Kvothe finds his father dying afterward, having dragged himself bleeding some twenty feet toward Laurian's body, his belly cut open.
