The theory§

In the aftermath of the Chandrian's slaughter of his troupe, Kvothe flees into the woods, passes through the door of sleep, and dreams. The dream replays his childhood lessons in woodcraft and survival, the very skills he must use to stay alive over the following years in the Eld. But the dream contains more than survival knowledge: Arliden begins to sing his unfinished song of Lanre, the subject that will consume the rest of Kvothe's life, and Ben teaches him knots. Because knots and music are both bound up with the deeper arts of Knowing and Naming, the theory holds that the dream is the sleeping mind surfacing connections Kvothe's waking grief cannot bear to process: the true understanding of why his family was killed, encoded in a form he sleeps through and never consciously grasps. Some read this as protective intervention by the angels, who are implied to arrive as the Chandrian flee and are known to speak to mortals in dreams, as they did to Perial.
