Laurian, the dark-haired noblewoman who abandoned her family to travel with Arliden and the Edema Ruh, is Netalia Lackless, the runaway sister of Meluan Lackless. The keystone of the identity is Arliden's teasing song, whose closing lines — 'It's worth my life / To make my wife / Not tally a lot less' — phonetically spell out 'Netalia Lackless' when read aloud; it is the meter exposing her hidden name, not the innuendo, that makes Laurian bristle. The reading is reinforced by Laurian's own account that she was 'a noble before she was a trouper,' lured by Arliden from 'a miserable dreary hell,' and by Meluan's bitter hatred of the Edema Ruh, rooted in a sister stolen away by a travelling troupe.
