Maer Lerand Alveron
“Vintas's most powerful Maer, patron and political minefield for Kvothe”
also known as Alveron, Lerand Alveron, Maer of Severen
Appearance§
Alveron is an aging, dignified aristocrat in his forties, silver-haired and of late middle age. During Kvothe's service he is weakened by lead poisoning yet recovers enough to stroll the garden paths with his hand resting lightly on Kvothe's arm. He carries himself with the gravity and pride of one of Vintas's greatest lords, superstitious and old-fashioned in the Vintish way, with a refined, courtly demeanor.
Description§
Maer Lerand Alveron is one of the most powerful men in Vintas, ruling from his estate at Severen and standing high in the kingdom's line of succession, ranked just below the royal family and prince regents and ahead of the Lackless line and the Jakis family. He inherited the rule of Severen at sixteen on his father's death and is a man in his forties when Kvothe meets him, described as every bit a king without crown or title. He becomes Kvothe's patron, recruiting him to court to help win the hand of Meluan Lackless, whom he courts and ultimately marries, tying his house to a line older than House Alveron itself. During Kvothe's service, Alveron is slowly being poisoned with lead through medicine supplied by his long-serving court arcanist Caudicus; Kvothe uncovers the plot, cures him, and stays at his side through recovery rather than fleeing. He commands the dangerous Dagon, whom he calls his 'mad dog on a short leash,' and relies on his childhood friend and manservant Stapes. He teaches Kvothe that power is either inherent or granted, and that even his own title and riches are merely granted power. He sends Kvothe to deal with bandits waylaying his tax collectors on the north road, and on Kvothe's return dismisses him after a clash with Meluan. House Alveron's colors are sapphire and ivory, blue and white.
