Wealthy eastern kingdom of nobility, intrigue, and the Lackless line

Appearance§

A hilly, rivered eastern land. The point on the map where three rivers converge corresponds to Three Crossings, on Kvothe's mother's side. Severen, the Maer's city, is its political heart, with the Eld forest and the Vintas/Modeg border lying to one side. The nobility is marked visually by worn rings denoting rank and by house colors, the Maer's being blue and white. The land is associated with old barrow kings, fine vintages, and an insular, tradition-bound aristocracy wary of arcane influence.

Description§

Vintas is one of the major nations of the Four Corners of civilization, a wealthy eastern kingdom alongside the Aturan Empire, Modeg, Ceald, and the Commonwealth. It is ruled by King Roderic Calanthis from the capital Renere, through a royal family, three prince regents, and a powerful peerage. The royal line is the house of Calanthis, in power since Feyda Calanthis. Among the most powerful nobles are Maer Alveron, seated in the city of Severen, Duchess Samista, and Aculeus and Meluan Lackless. Kvothe serves Maer Alveron during the events of The Wise Man's Fear. Vintish culture is distinctive: rigidly stratified court society uses rings of different metals to mark social standing and the relationship between those who exchange them, and its currency includes the royal and the Vintish penny. Vintish wines are designated by 'vintages,' a wordplay on the nation's name. Vintas is a deeply superstitious, broadly anti-arcane region that fears magic and clings to old beliefs about barrow wights and shamble-men, so arcanists are rare and University news travels there slowly. The kingdom was once ruled by the Alveron family, who spoke Eld Vintic, before Aturan conquest; the later kingdom took a new royal line bearing the Eld Vintic name Calanthis. Kvothe visited family on his mother's side at a place called Three Crossings, and the Lackless estate lies within or near Vintas.
