The theory§

Denna travels under a shifting series of near-identical aliases, Dianne, Dinnah, Dyanae, Dinael, Dinay, Dianah, Donna, Dyane, all phonetic cousins of her true name. Only one, Alora, breaks the pattern entirely, and she adopts it specifically while in Severen, the capital of Vintas. The theory reads this as deliberate concealment: she chooses a wholly unrelated name there because Severen is the one place where people might recognise a name close to her real one, which is most simply explained if she hails from the region. This also dissolves the apparent coincidence of her turning up in Severen at the same time as Kvothe, since it would simply be a return to familiar ground. A weaker reading allows that she merely lived there long enough to make recognition a danger rather than being born there, but the regional tie holds either way.
