Severen
“The Maer's split-level city in Vintas, divided into Severen-High and Severen-Low”
Appearance§
Severen is a vertically divided city, its upper district, Severen-High, perched markedly above the lower, Severen-Low, the two separated by a tall white cliff called the Sheer and linked by a great lift. The high district, built of pale stone, is the wealthy courtly heart around the Maer's estate, while the low district holds the city's grubbier commerce. The broader setting is low-lying, with valleys, nearby lakes, and a scattering of hills to the west toward the Stormwall, and a western gate Kvothe exits at least once.
Description§
Severen is a city in Vintas, marked on Temerant's map, that serves as the seat of the Maer Alveron. It is divided into an upper district, Severen-High, and a lower one, Severen-Low, separated by a tall white cliff called the Sheer and joined by a great lift. Severen-High, built of pale stone, sits well above the surrounding low country of valleys, lakes, and scattered hills west of the Stormwall, and holds the wealthy, courtly heart of the city around the Maer's estate; Severen-Low holds the city's grubbier commerce, where one goes for love potions and similar disreputable goods. Kvothe travels to Severen to enter the Maer's service and spends a major stretch of The Wise Man's Fear there, his passage arranged by Threpe, who controls the timing of his departure. Denna is present in the city during the same period. It is outside Severen that Denna plays Kvothe her song, leading to their bitter argument over its portrayal of Lanre, and during this stretch Kvothe leaves Denna's ring with Devi and lacks it, to her displeasure when he later returns it. Bredon's homeland lies in northern Vintas, where rumor holds he performs pagan rituals in the woods.
