Appearance§

Threpe is an older man with a grey beard, placing him among the white- and grey-bearded figures at the Eolian. He carries himself as a count and a patron of musicians, and presents as a charming, warm, kindly presence rather than a slippery one. He is observant company among the perceptive Eolian regulars.

Description§

Count Dennais Threpe is a grey-bearded nobleman of Imre, a great patron of the arts, and Kvothe's first patron. Charming, kind, and sharp-tongued, he loves music and is a regular at the Eolian almost every night, where he is friends with Deoch and Stanchion, who run the establishment. He takes a shine to Kvothe after hearing him play and champions him, lifting him toward powerful connections; most importantly, he arranges Kvothe's introduction to the Maer Alveron in Severen. His holdings are modest, however, and Simmon remarks it is surprising he can afford even the musicians he already patronizes, and that he cannot take Kvothe on as another. At the Eolian he gives Kvothe seven talents, enough to pay his tuition and loan interest and keep him at the University. He helps compose the 'Jackass, Jackass' song aimed at Ambrose, and he keeps closer track of Kvothe's travels than Kvothe realizes, assuming the worst when Kvothe's ship goes missing.
