Ambrose Jakis
“Kvothe's wealthy, sadistic noble rival at the University”
also known as Ambrose, Ambrose Jakis
Appearance§
Ambrose is presented as a haughty, well-dressed young nobleman, the picture of an arrogant high-born University student who flaunts his wealth and connections. He carries himself as a privileged heir and dabbles publicly as a poet.
Description§
Ambrose Jakis is Kvothe's wealthy, high-born rival at the University and his most persistent personal enemy. The firstborn heir of Baron Jakis, whose barony lies in the south and rules the pirate Isles, he comes from one of the most powerful families in Vintas, standing sixteenth in the peerage in The Name of the Wind and rising to thirteenth by the start of The Wise Man's Fear after the Surthen family is lost at sea; he boasts of being twelfth in line for the throne. He works as a scriv in the Archives. Openly fond of poetry, cruel and sadistic by reputation, he consistently relies on rank, wealth, and hired hands rather than personal combat. He and Kvothe wage an escalating feud: Kvothe writes a mocking song about him, robs his rooms, and in a burst of accidental power that shatters cobblestones breaks Ambrose's arm. Ambrose buys out Kvothe's employers to get him fired, arranges a plum bob dose before admissions, and conducts a sympathetic malfeasance against Kvothe using a mommet, attacks that end after Devi sympathetically burns the mommet in his rooms. His family makes inconvenient people disappear, and he is connected to men who kill for money.
