Devi is strawberry-blond, young, and roughly Kvothe's age. She is small and pretty, with a deceptively pleasant manner that masks how dangerous she is as a usurer and sympathist. Description§

Devi is an independent moneylender (gaelet) operating out of a flat above a butcher's shop in Imre, and a former University student removed from the school despite being a precociously talented and notoriously cocky arcanist of roughly Kvothe's age. Kvothe repeatedly borrows from her against dangerous collateral, including his talent pipes, which she accepts knowing exactly what they are, and a sample of his blood, which she holds for sympathetic leverage. She is a formidable sympathist with an Alar she describes as 'like the sea in a storm,' and an accomplished alchemist who concocted the plum bob. She practises her trade outside the University's sanctioned bounds and often takes payment in information rather than coin; she remarks that even her mother does not know her business. She and Ambrose share a bitter, undisclosed history: she states that Ambrose beats his whores and that she would have killed him years ago if she could do so and get away with it. When Kvothe and his circle break into Ambrose's room, Devi makes a sympathetic connection to burn Ambrose's puppet of Kvothe, starting a fire. Kvothe later gifts her the alchemy text Celum Tinture, and leaves Denna's ring with her as collateral during his trip to Severen, retrieving it later.
