Devi, Not Denna, Is the Mystery Girl Kvothe Sets the Stage For
Kvothe's elaborate build-up to introducing 'the girl' may point to Devi rather than the already-introduced Denna.
Also involves: Kvothe, Auri, The Eolian
The theory§
In the telling of his life, Kvothe pauses for an interlude in which he insists that the girl at the heart of his story must be introduced with great care, lest she slip away, and that he has been carefully setting the stage for her arrival. This theory seizes on an apparent inconsistency: Denna had already entered the narrative quietly, traveling with Roent's caravan and treated as merely a girl Kvothe fancied, so the elaborate build-up cannot logically herald her. The female character introduced for the first time immediately after this interlude is Devi, making her the cleaner fit for the figure Kvothe is preparing the audience to meet. Against this, Kvothe states plainly that the woman is waiting in the wings at the Eolian, where he has met Denna but never Devi or Auri, and the storytelling cues, the strawberry wine that cracks when Chronicler mentions a woman and the selas flower Kote keeps at the Waystone, all point to Denna. A softer reading holds that Denna, Devi, and Auri are all introduced in close succession around that point, and that Kvothe's unreliable narration may intend all three to be 'the girl' in different ways.
Evidence§
Denna was introduced to the story on Roent's … caravan with no fanfare. She was just a girl he fancied at the time.
OP's premise: Denna entered quietly, so the elaborate build-up cannot herald her. — u/finalgamer1992He spends a whole interlude saying that he has been setting the stage for his mystery girl to appear, but he didn't know how to approach her. He has already talked about Denna.
Core inconsistency: why elaborately set up a character already introduced? — u/finalgamer1992You know what female character WAS introduced for the first time in the following section? Devi.
OP's key claim: Devi is the new character introduced right after the interlude. — u/finalgamer1992I know he explicitly describes Denna as beautiful, and has a hard time describing her. I know that Denna better fits the description for how they "do slow circles around one another." But this is just one piece I cannot seem to shake.
OP concedes evidence favoring Denna but holds onto the inconsistency. — u/finalgamer1992Denna is a red herring, Devi is the actual girl being talked about. It's an interesting idea to consider.
Commenter endorses the theory's framing. — u/TenaceErbacciaI've thought that every time I've read the book, until I get to Kvothe at the Eolian. He's really explicty before the duet that we're about to meet 'the girl'.
CounterCounter: text says the girl is met at the Eolian, where only Denna appears. — u/Personal_Track_3780It's Denna. She is the one waiting in the wings in the Eolian. Kvothe has never met Devi or Auri there, so it's impossible. … Denna's favorite strawberry wine cracks when Chronicler mentions "a woman." Kvothe keeps Selas at the Waystone. It's Denna.
CounterStrongest counter: Eolian setting plus storytelling cues all point to Denna. — u/LostInStories222The part of the story where Kvothe says we will be introduced to "the girl" we are introduced to both Denna, Devi, and Auri. … my hypothesis is that all three of them are "the girl" in some way
Softer reconciling reading: all three introduced together may all be 'the girl'. — u/Mielkevejen

Tier reasoning§
tier verified: heavily countered in-thread (text points to the Eolian/Denna), remains a speculative reading
