The Eolian
“Imre's renowned music hall where a musician can win the silver pipes”
Appearance§
The Eolian is a multi-level music hall with a performance stage and an audience floor where patrons drink, play cards, and listen to musicians. Drinks such as metheglin, a spiced mead, are served. Outside stands a courtyard with a fountain and a satyr statue cast in stone. The atmosphere is convivial and reputation-driven, and winning one's silver pipes there is a public, celebrated event.
Description§
The Eolian is the celebrated music hall of Imre, sitting across the river from the University and run by its co-owners Stanchion and Deoch. Musicians who perform well enough can earn their silver talent pipes there, marking them as recognized masters of their craft. It is on the Eolian's stage that Kvothe wins his own pipes by performing The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard, completing the difficult duet with Denna, who first appears to him there with knots braided into her hair. The hall draws University students such as Kvothe, Wil, Sim, and Fela, as well as wealthy figures like Ambrose Jakis and patrons of music like Count Threpe. During a game of corners at the Eolian, Kvothe and his friends explain how sympathy works to Denna, prompting her question about a magic in which writing something down makes it real. Fela later meets Kvothe at the Eolian to give him the shaed. Delayed by the Fishery fire, Kvothe once arrives late to find that Denna has left in the company of a white-haired man taken to be her patron, Master Ash.
