The Fishery
“Kilvin's artificery workshop where students craft sygaldry by hand”
also known as Artificery, Kilvin's workshop, the Fishery
Appearance§
The Fishery is a working artificery of heavy worktables, catwalks, and a waist-high lipped firewell, its machinery cluttered with cogs, gears, and tools. On one worktable sits a massive cylindrical container about four feet high and two feet across, its edges sealed without bulky welds, the metal dull and burnished. When the bone-tar ignites, jagged sodium-red flames dance across a boiling dark fog and swell toward the firewell's lip with a crimson flare, the heat felt even from the catwalk amid the smell and hum of sympathy work.
Description§
The Fishery is the University's artificery workshop, run by Master Artificer Kilvin, where students craft devices through sygaldry, runes inscribed on materials whose scratching or damage can ruin the work. Sympathy lamps and iceless boxes are made there, using materials such as bassal shavings, which burn white-hot when heated. During a public demonstration, a large sealed cylinder of bone-tar in the workshop ignites and Kvothe rescues the Re'lar Fela from the blaze; bone-tar burns with a bright sodium-red, crimson flame rather than blue. Fela works there chiefly for its sculpting equipment, cutting tile and glass, while Jaxim and Manet are regulars. Kilvin links the name 'Kote' to the saying about expecting disaster every seven years, a phrase he first spoke after the Fishery once burned. Kvothe also builds an arrowcatch there, an automatically triggered kinetic device that stops arrows using eight springs of modified bear-trap steel arranged in a circle.

Established facts§
- The Fishery is the University's artificery workshop, run by Master Artificer Kilvin.
- Students make devices using sygaldry, runes inscribed on materials, and scratching or damaging the runes can ruin a device.
- Sympathy lamps and iceless boxes are among the items produced there; bassal shavings are used in sympathy lamps and burn white-hot if heated enough.
- During a public demonstration a large sealed cylindrical container of bone-tar ignites, and Kvothe rescues Fela from the resulting fire.
- The fire begins when the bone-tar canister grows so cold, from damaged sygaldry, that the metal shatters like glass on the stone floor.
- Bone-tar burns with a bright sodium-red, crimson flame rather than blue.
- Kilvin tells Kvothe that 'Kote' relates to the saying about expecting disaster every seven years, a phrase he first spoke after the Fishery once burned.
- Fela works in the Fishery for its equipment, sculpting and working with cut tile and glass rather than sygaldry, and has reached Re'lar when saved there.
- Jaxim and Manet also work in the Fishery.
- Kvothe builds an arrowcatch in the Fishery, a kinetic device that stops arrows by pushing back with modified bear-trap spring steel, designed with eight springs arranged in a circle.
