Manet is at least fifty years old, with wild hair and a grizzled, disheveled beard. He carries the rumpled look of a man who has only just woken up, and reads as the archetypal aging, long-tenured student.

Description§

Manet is a longtime fixture of the University, a student who has been in the Arcanum longer than any of Kvothe's friends have been alive yet remains ranked only E'lir, the lowest rank. At least fifty years old, with wild hair and a grizzled beard, he looks perpetually as though he had only just woken up. He works in the Fishery, where he tinkers contentedly, untroubled by ambition to advance or leave, satisfied with cheap board and free access to materials. He befriends Kvothe early and mentors him in small ways: he bets that Kvothe will make E'lir within three terms and explains to Simmon how patronage works. He plays cards with Kvothe, Wil and Sim, and after one losing hand poses Kvothe a corners question that Elodin later asks him in turn. He provides exposition on University life, noting that Fela works in the Fishery for access to its equipment and sculpts with cut tile and glass, and jokingly calls Kilvin's exothermic cascade 'a big goddamn fire.' He also implies there is a secret way into the Archives, encouraging Kvothe to search for it. Of all Kvothe's circle, Manet is the one content to remain at the University forever.
