Manet Is a Hidden Amyr Guarding the University from Within

fringe identity · popularity 66 · 1 source thread

Manet's endless tenure at the University could be cover for an Amyr watchman quietly guarding the place from the inside.

About: Manet, The Amyr

Also involves: The University, The Fishery, The Archives, The Arcanum, The Chandrian

The theory§

This theory proposes that Manet, who has remained at the University for longer than the rest of Kvothe's circle have been alive without any ambition to advance or leave, is not merely a contented perpetual student but a planted guardian, perhaps an Amyr. Having seen every master's quirk, every corner of the grounds, and generations of students pass through, Manet would be ideally placed to detect an intrusion by the Chandrian or worse. He also hints at a hidden way into the Archives that he never reveals, suggesting knowledge of the University beyond an ordinary student's, since the Underthing route Kvothe eventually finds is unlikely to be the path Manet had in mind. The counterweight is mundane: Manet is an E'lir who has deliberately stayed at the bottom rank to keep his tuition and expectations low, his name means he remains in Latin and serves as a theatrical stage direction for a character who stays, and he reads convincingly as a man who simply found a comfortable life and kept it. The theory sits within a broader pattern of suspected hidden Amyr sheltered at the University, alongside Auri and Puppet.

Evidence§

  • This guy's been at the University for decades … without a care for climbing ranks or leaving. Yes, he's got that comfy setup with low tuition from his work and all the free resources he could want, but it feels deeper than just being a "professional student"
OP's opening observation: Manet's endless tenure seems too deliberate to be mere comfort.u/DictionaryDave
  • Manet isn't just sticking around for the perks. I think he's been quietly guarding the University from the inside, like an Amyr plant.
OP's core claim: Manet is a planted Amyr guardian.u/DictionaryDave
  • He's the guy who knows every nook of the University, every master's quirk, and every student's weak spot. If Chandrian or worse show up, who's better positioned to spot it than Manet?
OP's reasoning: Manet's total knowledge makes him ideal to detect intruders.u/DictionaryDave
  • Manet implies there is an secret way into the Archives … Kvothe eventually does, through the Underthing, but I find it very hard to believe that this is the way that Manet was referring to. So Manet must know of a different way into the Archives.
Comment adds evidence: Manet knows a hidden Archives route beyond an ordinary student's.u/mrturt
  • The idea of him as a low-key guardian actually fits with how much knowledge he casually drops.
Comment reinforces that Manet's casual expertise supports the guardian reading.u/strongmad27
  • I think Manet is one of the Amyr (or human Amyr -- like the Duke of Gibea) the university is hiding, like Auri and Puppet.
Comment situates Manet within a broader pattern of hidden Amyr at the University.u/opuntia_conflict
  • He's an E'lir not a Re'lar. … “And still a lowly E’lir,” Wilem said … “Huzzah to being an E’lir,” Manet said earnestly. “You boys will regret it if you move any farther up the ranks. … It's just more hassle and higher tuitions.”
CounterCounter: corrects the rank and shows Manet's own mundane reason for staying.u/LostInStories222
  • Manet translates to "He/she/It remains" In Latin … manet is used as a stage direction to indicate that a character remains on the stage.
CounterCounter: his name itself is a literary signal he is simply one who stays.u/Chaxum
