Wilem
“Kvothe's loyal Cealdish friend at the University, a stone in deep water”
also known as Wil
Appearance§
Wilem is a full-blooded Ceald with a ruddy complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes, his voice thick with the harsh burr of a Siaru accent. He is consistently the dark figure of the trio, contrasted with light-haired Simmon. His presence registers more through manner than through fine detail: reserved, watchful, 'a stone in deep water.'
Description§
Wilem, called Wil, is one of Kvothe's two closest friends at the University, alongside Simmon. He is a full-blooded Ceald, marked by a ruddy complexion, dark hair and eyes, and a thick Siaru accent that makes his dry sarcasm hard to parse. He readily believes in things others dismiss, including Cealdish sky spirits, faeries, and the Fae. He works in and around the Archives, knows its staff and workings well, and supplies Kvothe with useful information, such as identifying Viari as one of Lorren's gillers working in acquisitions. He translates the Archives' inscription, Vorfelan Rhinata Morie, as 'The desire for knowledge shapes a man.' Within the trio described as 'one dark, one light, and one fiery,' Wil is the dark one, set against light-haired Simmon and fiery Kvothe; Denna characterizes him as 'a stone in deep water.' His loyalty shows when he and Simmon take turns watching over the sleeping Kvothe to guard him from sympathetic attack after the loss of his gram.
