Kvothe Recreates the Aethe-Rethe Legend to Engineer His Own Death
Kvothe's three-day story mirrors Aethe and Rethe, casting him as the dying teacher manipulating Bast into killing him.
About: Kvothe, Bast, Aethe and Rethe
Also involves: Felurian, The Fae, The Lethani, The Adem, Chronicler, The Shaed, The Cthaeh, Wilem
The theory§
This theory holds that Kvothe's insistence on telling his life over three days is a deliberate reenactment of the founding legend of the Lethani, in which the dying master Rethe dictated nine-and-ninety stories to her student Aethe over the days she lay wounded. Kvothe occupies the Rethe role: a mortally compromised teacher pouring knowledge into a single student before death. That student is Bast, the Prince of Twilight, whom Kvothe is shown subtly provoking throughout the frame. The conclusion is that Kvothe means to needle Bast into losing his temper and killing him, completing the frame story as the tragedy Kvothe openly says he is telling. Supporting resonances include the parallel to Felurian, who taught Kvothe through stories across Fae-stretched days, and the near-homophony of 'Rethe' and 'Reshi', Bast's name for Kvothe.
Evidence§
The Lady of Twilight teaches Kvothe through stories over the course of three days. Kvothe was her student. … Kvothe now teaches the Prince of Twilight through stories, over the course of three days.
Core claim: Felurian/Kvothe student-teacher pattern repeats with Kvothe/Bast. — u/SmurphiliciousDuring those days, Rethe dictated nine-and-ninety stories, and Aethe wrote them down. These tales were the beginning of our understanding of the Lethani.
The Aethe-Rethe legend: dying master dictates stories to a student over days. — u/SmurphiliciousKvothe is the wounded Rethe, telling these stories as he lay dying.
Casts Kvothe in the dying-teacher Rethe role of the legend. — u/Smurphilicious“I know what sort of story I’m telling. This is no comedy.”
Kvothe himself frames his tale as a tragedy, fitting the death conclusion. — u/SmurphiliciousYou know who the blue one is. You know who is lightning. … Bast’s eyes were now the pale blue-white of lightning … Bastas needs to kill Kvothe.
Bast is the blue/lightning one who, like Aethe, must strike the teacher down. — u/SmurphiliciousFull of anger, Aethe shot his arrow. It struck Rethe like a thunderbolt.
Legend's climax: enraged student kills master, mirroring intended Bast outcome. — u/SmurphiliciousThis is Kvothe's plan. He's going to manipulate Bast into losing his temper, trick him into it.
Refines mechanism: Kvothe deliberately provokes Bast, not accidental. — u/SmurphiliciousRethe and Reshi aren't that different as words either, kinda just sound related.
Adds linguistic parallel: Rethe near-homophone of Bast's name for Kvothe. — u/cloudspike84Bast might be the one to kill Kote and bring Kvothe back.
CounterCounter: Bast's killing could resurrect Kvothe rather than be pure tragedy. — u/VegitoFusionWhy would Baste need to kill Kvothe?
CounterCounter: questions the necessity of Bast killing Kvothe at all. — u/lico114
