Aethe and Rethe
“An ancient Adem legend of two lovers and the founding of the Lethani”
also known as The story of Aethe and Rethe
Appearance§
As a story/legend rather than a person, Aethe and Rethe has no physical form. The corpus treats it as a narrative artifact within Adem oral tradition, characterized by its antiquity and its resonance with other tragic love tales in the books. Fans visualize it through that shared pattern — two lovers, a fatal act, and a transformation of the wider world — and through its association with the Sithe, the Lethani, and the early history of Ademre. No concrete imagery is established beyond its role as an ancient, much-retold tale.
Description§
Aethe and Rethe is an ancient Adem legend, relayed as part of Shehyn's teaching to Kvothe, and connected to the origins of the Adem people and the Lethani. In the tale the master archer Aethe shoots his student and lover Rethe; as she lies dying she dictates nine-and-ninety stories to him, and these become the beginning of the Lethani and the foundation of Ademre. The story is one of the oldest encoded mythologies of its culture, told with the same tragic shape as Lanre and Lyra and Sir Savien and Aloine, in which a man is bound up with the woman he loves in a tragedy that reshapes the wider world.
