Eldest of the Adem who tells Kvothe the Chandrian's true names

Appearance§

Shehyn is an old Adem woman of Haert, dressed in the grey mercenary garb of her people. She carries the spare, economical manner and the expressionless still face typical of the Adem, her authority conveyed through restraint rather than display. Small and deadly, she is capable of taking a single perfect step of the Ketan, a feat beyond ordinary practitioners.

Description§

Shehyn is the eldest and a leading master among the Adem of Haert, deeply versed in the Ketan and the Lethani. She is one of the few who knowingly preserves the deep history of the Chandrian, and she gives Kvothe the Adem version of Lanre's tale using the Seven's real names, including Ferule for Cinder, describing the ancient race who sang songs of power and fought well. She recounts the tale only once, under ritual rules, warning Kvothe not to repeat the names for a thousand days. In her account, an enemy who could not win by strength moved like a worm in fruit, poisoning seven others against the empire until they forgot the Lethani; six of them betrayed their cities, but one remembered the Lethani and did not betray, and that city did not fall. She takes Kvothe to a hidden, beautiful valley above Haert and presses him on the nature of beauty, teaching him that a beautiful thing simply is, and that is enough. She teaches him the signs of the Chandrian and observes that Kvothe carries the Lethani yet has something in him deeper than the Lethani that she cannot understand. She is present when Magwyn names him Maedre.
