The Adem's named sequence of fighting movements

also known as The Way the Body Moves

Appearance§

The Ketan is dance-like, deliberate motion. Practitioners run through it slowly to stretch and loosen, and at full mastery move with the fluid certainty of Shehyn. In the frame, Kvothe lifts his hands like a dancer, shifts his weight, and takes a single perfect step, moving with the subtle certainty of a thief in the night. Its movements carry poetic names like 'Maiden Combs Her Hair' and 'Sleeping Bear.'

Description§

The Ketan is the Adem martial discipline that Kvothe learns during his time in Ademre, taught primarily by the mercenary Tempi and overseen by the elder Shehyn. It consists of a sequence of named movements, such as 'Maiden Combs Her Hair' and 'Sleeping Bear,' whose evocative names serve as deliberate disguises, allowing the Adem to speak of the forms without revealing their secrets. Beyond combat, the form is restorative: when Kvothe is stiff and exhausted on the road, working slowly through the familiar Ketan loosens his tight muscles. Mastery is measured against expert Adem like Shehyn and Penthe and takes a great span of time, with some moves described as the work of a lifetime. The Ketan returns in the frame story: at the close of The Wise Man's Fear, the innkeeper goes downstairs behind shuttered windows, lifts his hands like a dancer, shifts his weight, and takes a single perfect step, showing he still retains the form.
