Kvothe's terror of hand-injury, his oath 'on my good left hand', and failed sympathy hint he lost fingers concealed by glamourie.

About: Kvothe

Also involves: Bast, Denna, Vashet, The Ketan, The Cthaeh, The Adem

The theory§

This theory holds that Kvothe, living as Kote, has lost fingers on his right hand — a thumb and forefinger — and conceals the injury through glamourie, the Fae art of making things seem. The wound is read as the deliberate inverse of an Adem warrior Kvothe meets, whose right hand is crippled to only a thumb and forefinger and whom Kvothe names his 'worst fear'. The case is built from a chain of foreshadowing: Kvothe's obsessive terror of maiming his hands, his oath to Denna sworn pointedly on his 'good left hand', Vashet's warning that the Adem sever fingers to stop a student practicing the Ketan, and frame-story hints of a weakened right hand, a new scar, and long sleeves. Most telling is the failed sympathy at the Waystone, where Kote dips a finger into spilled brandy and 'nothing happened', and the line 'but no, of course there was no music', read as proof he can no longer play. Competing explanations hold that he lost and reattached a whole hand, or that the Cthaeh's Rhinna flower healed or hid the wound rather than glamourie.

Evidence§

  • he's missing a thumb and forefinger, and Bast uses glamourie to hide it. Just a theory that I can't prove.
OP's core claim: Kvothe lost a thumb and forefinger, concealed by Bast's glamourie.u/chainsawx72
  • Kvothe swears on his 'good left hand' to Denna. … I swear it by my good left hand.
The pointed oath 'good left hand' implies the right hand is not good.u/chainsawx72
  • Kvothe's greatest fear is having his hands crippled. … with so much of my livelihood relying on my clever hands, the thought of a broken thumb was terrifying.
Obsessive terror of maimed hands sets up the loss as his realized worst fear.u/chainsawx72
  • His left hand was whole, but his right was viciously crippled, with only his thumb and forefinger remaining. … Kvothe's finger loss will be the exact opposite of this Adem's hands (other hand, other fingers).
The maimed Adem is read as an inverse template for Kvothe's right-hand wound.u/chainsawx72
  • his hands merely scrabbled uselessly at the soldier's scarred fist.
In the frame fight, Kvothe's grip mysteriously fails, hinting at a damaged hand.u/chainsawx72
  • Kote dips his finger in the brandy when trying to do sympathy on the mercenary/shambleman - maybe it didn't work because he doesn't actually have that finger. … He muttered something under his breath … Nothing happened.
Comment adds the failed Waystone sympathy as evidence the finger is gone.u/machardwood
  • If there had been music . . . but no, **of course** there was no music.
OP reads this as proof Kvothe can no longer play, his hand being ruined.u/Vardil
  • I think he lost a hand, but had it sowed back on, but it just isn't the same. … The first question Kvothe asks Ben about the university is whether it's true they can sew an arm back on if it gets cut off.
CounterCounter: he lost a whole hand reattached, not fingers hidden by glamourie.u/_jericho
