Vashet
“The Adem mercenary who trains Kvothe in the Lethani and Ketan”
also known as The Hammer
Appearance§
Vashet wears the characteristic blood-red Adem mercenary clothing. As an Adem she shares her people's pale coloring and restrained, controlled physicality, and she carries herself as a seasoned, disciplined instructor, expressive through the Adem hand-language as much as through words. Her combat is marked by exacting precision; she disdains fighters who recklessly bloody an opponent. When she strikes Kvothe, the blow feels as though the whole of creation strikes him through the strength of her arm.
Description§
Vashet is an Adem mercenary and Kvothe's chief teacher during his time in Ademre, training him in the Ketan fighting form and the Lethani moral philosophy. Known as 'the Hammer,' she beats, strikes, kicks, and throws him as part of his instruction, with control precise enough that she never breaks his skin or leaves a lasting mark. She holds the authority either to continue his training or to maim and kill him to protect Adem secrets; her choice to continue is why Kvothe abandons his plans to flee. She gives him his Adem name, Maedre, and warns him to guard it closely. Vashet comes from an Adem city more cosmopolitan than Haert, where the commonwealth tongue is spoken and merchants pass through, and she once spent four years as bodyguard and captain to a poet in the Small Kingdoms who was also a king, whom she calls her 'poet king.' She is roughly ten years older than Kvothe. Along with Shehyn, she is one of the few in Ademre to whom Kvothe reveals his intent to harm the Chandrian. Though she first saw gentleness in him, she comes to believe a dark and ruthless thing is his true face, something deeper than the Lethani that the Lethani cannot mend.
