Catharsis as Purification Is a Recurring Tragic Motif Around Kvothe

plausible symbolism · popularity 65 · 1 source thread

The Greek-tragedy idea of catharsis as cleansing recurs across KKC, with Vashet acting as the Hammer that beats the darkness out of Kvothe.

About: Kvothe, Vashet

Also involves: The Lethani, Denna, Haliax, The Cthaeh, Tarbean, Tempi, The Shaed

The theory§

Read through the lens of Greek tragedy, the Kingkiller Chronicle returns again and again to catharsis in its older sense: purification and cleansing through suffering. The motif surfaces in Menda's call for the penitent to repent their sins, and in Denna's Song of Seven Sorrows, which recasts the burning of Myr Tariniel as a 'purifying fire' and Lanre as a tragic hero wrongly used. Its most concentrated expression is Ademre, where Vashet perceives a darkness in Kvothe and becomes, by name, his 'Hammer' — the instrument that beats the worst out of him — after which he repents by playing the wordless song hidden in his heart. The same alchemical reading attaches to Tarbean, where Kvothe's hair is remarked to have turned from black to red in the innkeeper's bath, black-to-red being the start and end of the alchemical path from base lead to gold. Taken together these form the architecture of a classical tragedy: a protagonist of great gifts undone by his own hand, his story the titular Chronicle of the deeds that ruin him.

Evidence§

  • Catharsis is from the Ancient Greek word κάθαρσις, katharsis, meaning "purification" or "cleansing" … The desired result is an emotional state of renewal and restoration.
Defines catharsis as purification/cleansing, the lens for the whole theory.u/Smurphilicious
  • catharsis being "purification" and "cleansing" might remind you of Menda, telling people to become penitent, to repent their sins and cross to his Path.
Links catharsis to Menda's call to repent sins.u/Smurphilicious
  • In her song, Lanre was painted in tragic tones, a hero wrongly used. Selitos’ words were cruel and biting, Myr Tariniel a warren that was better for the purifying fire.
Denna's Song of Seven Sorrows recasts Lanre's tragedy with purifying fire.u/Smurphilicious
  • Vashet believes there is a darkness in him, that his face is a mask, and that the darkness is Kvothe's true self.
Vashet perceives darkness in Kvothe needing to be purged.u/Smurphilicious
  • Then I played the song that hides in the center of me.That wordless music that moves through the secret places in my heart. … This repentance, this painful catharsis, this is the breath of joy.
Kvothe repents through wordless song, his cathartic breath of joy.u/Smurphilicious
  • I really do like the parallel of Vashet *literally* being the Hammer that beats some of the evil out of Kvothe. There is some darkness in him, and he did have need of the Lethani.
Endorses Vashet-as-Hammer beating evil out of Kvothe.u/HarmlessSnack
  • On returning, the inn keeper remarks that Kvothe's hair went from black to red. In alchemy these represent the start and end point of the alchemical path, black represents base metals such as lead, red represents gold.
Adds Tarbean bath as alchemical purification, black-to-red, lead-to-gold.u/Jandy777
  • I always took Kvothe's performance in front of Vashet as Kvothe successfully deceiving his teacher. He IS full of darkness and he does wear a mask to conceal it.
CounterCounter: the repentance is deception, not genuine purification.u/Courtsey_Cow
