The Adem mercenary who teaches Kvothe the Ketan and the Lethani

Appearance§

Tempi is an Adem mercenary, pale, fair-haired, light-eyed, and lightly built, clad in the characteristic blood-red garb of the Adem. He keeps his face still, often appearing blank before emotion breaks through, and channels feeling into precise hand gestures rather than expression. He carries a sword, which he holds pointed downward to convey elaborate respect when greeting Shehyn.

Description§

Tempi is an Adem mercenary whom Kvothe meets in the Eld while hunting bandits alongside Dedan, Hespe, and Marten. He becomes Kvothe's first teacher of the Adem fighting art, the Ketan, and of the Lethani, and ultimately escorts Kvothe back to Ademre for formal training. The Adem speak emotion through small, precise hand gestures rather than facial expression, and much of Kvothe's early relationship with Tempi turns on his slowness to read that silent language. Tempi tells Kvothe he might one day match his skill, but only after a year of training in Ademre. He resolves to intervene in Kvothe's affairs after Kvothe shows a willingness to escalate a sparring match toward lethal force. When Dedan recounts how Felurian kills men through sex, Tempi reacts first with blank confusion and then with deep revulsion, relaxing only once he learns the men die of exhaustion or madness rather than disease. In teaching Kvothe the Ketan and the Lethani, Tempi shares matters his people consider improper to reveal to outsiders, and relates to Kvothe in part as Edema Ruh.
