The Shaed
“Kvothe's cloak woven of shadow, made for him by Felurian in the Fae”
also known as Felurian's cloak, shadow cloak, shadow-cloak, turning cloak
Appearance§
The shaed is a cloak woven entirely of shadow, reading as deep, supple darkness draped over its wearer and shifting like a second skin. Felurian works it up from starlight and wefts moonlight into the fabric, so that it is shadow given weight and substance, a paradox even Kvothe cannot explain. In a later state it becomes threadbare and tattered.
Description§
The shaed is a cloak made of shadow, woven for Kvothe by Felurian during his sojourn in the Fae. In one of the series' striking magical images, Felurian builds it up from starlight and wefts moonlight into the fabric, prompting Kvothe's bafflement that light, having 'no weight, no substance,' should be touchable at all. Elodin later calls it a 'turning cloak' and recognizes it on sight. The shaed becomes one of Kvothe's defining possessions: it turns aside Alleg's knife and saves his life during his methodical killing of the false troupe, a scene in which he carries it alongside his sword Caesura. It is presumed locked away in the thrice-locked chest at the Waystone Inn together with his rings, lute, and book.
