Kvothe's 'Ridiculous Rumors' Are Hidden Truths Wrapped as Lies
The University rumors Kvothe dismisses as nonsense, like demons bargaining for blood, are actually true or will become true.
About: Kvothe
Also involves: Devi, Felurian, The Shaed, Fela, Ambrose Jakis, The University, Naming, The Moon, Taborlin the Great
The theory§
This theory reads Kvothe's account of his 'storybook' University reputation as Rothfuss concealing truth inside dismissed nonsense. Kvothe lists the wild claims folk repeat about him — that he speaks eight languages, can see in the dark, and was charmed as an infant in a basket hung from a rowan tree by full-moon light, a faerie turning his eyes from blue to green — framing them as rumors he started himself, with only 'a thread of truth' woven through. Yet several of the supposedly absurd elements prove literally real: Devi bargains for his blood the way a demon would, Felurian grants him the shaed as a magic charm, and Kvothe gains the ability to see in the dark in the Fae. By this reading the rowan-tree faerie charm — and the green eyes it gave him — is the next concealed truth waiting to pay off, consistent with Rothfuss's repeated insistence that every story carries a grain of truth and therefore also a lie.
Evidence§
Kvothe is saying "it's only kind of true, it's not really true" but all of it is, or *will* be.
OP's core thesis: the dismissed rumors are actually true or will become true. — u/SmurphiliciousThree-quarters of the stories folk told about me at the University were ridiculous rumors I’d started myself. … When I was three days old, my mother hung me in a basket from a rowan tree by the light of the full moon. That night a faerie laid a powerful charm on me to always keep me safe. It turned my eyes from blue to leafy green.
The source text Kvothe frames as ridiculous rumor, including the rowan-tree charm. — u/SmurphiliciousThere were no demons out there, bargaining for blood. … Demon Devi quite literally did bargain for his blood.
First proof: a 'nonsense' claim already came literally true via Devi. — u/SmurphiliciousThere were no helpful faeries granting magic charms. … Felurian grants Kvothe a turning cloak, a shaed.
Second proof: the 'no faerie charms' line is contradicted by Felurian's shaed. — u/SmurphiliciousWhen he was gathering shadows with Felurian, he used magic to make a light, which is when she tackled him and did something to him. After that he could see in the dark right? At least for while he was in the fae
Comment adds evidence the 'see in the dark' rumor also became literally true. — u/shawnalee07theres aturan, ademre hand speak, the knots, siaru, ceald, that one he learned when he got arrested (lol thats 6...or 3/4. smurph you beautiful basterd).
Comment supports the 'eight languages' claim by counting languages Kvothe knows. — u/nugfiendcome on... Devi is no demon
CounterCounter: disputes that Devi qualifies as the demon bargaining for blood. — u/CedleodubTaborlin never actually existed though, he’s just a folk tale.
CounterCounter: the Taborlin comparison can't 'come true' if Taborlin is only legend. — u/Aridius

Tier reasoning§
no change; the dismissed rumors do recur as fact in-text, plausible fits
