Vashet May Know Yllish Knot-Magic and Gran of Levenshire May Be a Hidden Amyr
Vashet's 'secret Ketan' could be Yllish knot-magic, and an obscure village healer may be a concealed Amyr agent.
Also involves: Denna, The Adem, Ademre
The theory§
This post advances two independent small-scale character observations rather than a single plot reveal. The first proposes that Vashet possesses knowledge of Yllish knot-magic: Celean mentions that 'Vashet has a secret Ketan', and Vashet's background on the Path of Joy is linked circumstantially to Denna's own facility with Yllish story-knots, drawing on the wider notion that the Adem and Edema Rue share an origin and that some Adem are skilled in knots. The second proposes that Gran, the healer of Levenshire, is a concealed Amyr, inferred from her emphasis on justice and the greater good, her unusual competence and note-filled book, and the broader pattern of Amyr operating quietly in plain sight. The supposed false-troop episode is read as a possible Amyr 'interview' for Kvothe that Gran could have set in motion. Counter-arguments note that the 'greater good' phrasing is used casually by ordinary people such as Arliden, that Kvothe's reason for not fleeing Ademre is plainly stated (Vashet decides to keep teaching him rather than maim or kill him), and that Felurian claims there are no human Amyr, leaving both claims as suggestive texture rather than established fact.
Evidence§
Celean tells Kvothe “*Vashet has a secret Ketan*” when they’re discussing the role of women in the Commonwealth. And Vashet has come from the Path of Joy before she trained with Shayen.
OP's seed: Vashet's 'secret Ketan' plus Path of Joy background hint at hidden knot-magic. — u/TVpresspassThen comes Chapter 122: The next morning he gets up and gathers everything he needs to leave, explicitly listing the sympathist’s weapons. Then goes to Vashet’s house and secretly plucks a strand of her hair. He is geared up to get out and perform some hefty malfeasance to make sure he can escape.
OP sets up the scene: Kvothe is fully prepared to flee Haert by force. — u/TVpresspassShe has cast the same magic on him that Denna does. She forms the braids, ties them, and he changes.
OP's central claim: the braiding is knot-magic that reverses Kvothe's intent to leave. — u/TVpresspassthe Adem have a portion of their population skilled in Yllish knots points out a lot of clues towards Denna's origins. She's constantly fidgiting with her hands
Comment reinforces Adem/Edema knot-skill link underpinning the Vashet-Denna connection. — u/goodyearbeltShe literally uses the words “for the greater good” when coaching Kvothe through his ordeal with the false troupers. She says “some folk just need killin!”
OP's Thesis Two: Gran voices Amyr 'greater good' philosophy and endorsement of killing. — u/TVpresspassShe owns an annotated copy of the Hereborica, is exceptionally skilled, and has the Arrowroot debate that Kvothe takes home to the university, which is new to Master Arwyl
OP's supporting detail: Gran's note-filled book and unusual competence suggest hidden Amyr research. — u/TVpresspassI've commented before about how I think that the false troop was a greater good test put on Kvothe by the Amyr as a sort of interview task to potentially become one of them.
Comment extends theory: false-troupe episode as an Amyr interview Gran could have set in motion. — u/XanderSnow86Kvothe decides not to leave because Vashet tells him he's allowed to stay, that she will continue teaching him.
CounterCounter: Kvothe stays for the plainly-stated reason, not knot-magic. — u/Jezer1is anyone who uses these words an Amyr, or is it possible that Gran or Arliden used this phrase despite not being Amyr?
CounterCounter: Arliden also says 'greater good' casually, so the phrase need not mark an Amyr. — u/orangewombat
