The theory§

This theory traces a recurring 'dance for joy' motif through the books and reads it as a hidden thread connecting skin-dancer possession to the encoded names of the Ketan. The pattern links the people Tehlu hammers free of inner demons who then dance for joy, the hollow-eyed Tarbean addict commanded to strip and dance, Felurian's 'dance for joy,' and Jax's joy as the moon descends. Because the Adem teach that the names of the Ketan are deliberate disguises meant to let one speak of a thing without spilling its secret, forms such as 'Sleeping Bear' are read as clues pointing at these buried truths. Vashet's open-handed slap, described as the whole of creation striking through her arm, is read as a hammer-blow echoing Tehlu hammering demons out of men and the Selitos and Lanre encounter. The pattern is extended by the observation that the tallest nail is hammered down first: several tall figures, Kirel, the smith Rengen, Aaron, and Tim, cluster around Tehlu, ironwork, and broken bells.

Evidence§

  • I was tracing what I call the "dance for joy" thread yesterday … and it clicked for me this morning.
OP frames the core thesis: a recurring 'dance for joy' motif runs through the books.u/Smurphilicious
  • He told her it was hers if she stripped naked and danced for him, right there in the street.
First motif instance: hollow-eyed Tarbean addict commanded to strip and dance.u/Smurphilicious
  • Some of them danced for the joy of being free of such terrible things living inside them.
Tehlu hammers demons out of people, who then dance for joy, tying motif to possession.u/Smurphilicious
  • The names in the Ketan are everything. "Some names reveal. The names in the Ketan are meant to hide the truth, that we may speak of it without spilling its secrets to the open air. "
Adem Ketan names deliberately disguise truth, so forms like Sleeping Bear are read as clues.u/Smurphilicious
  • The purpose of Sleeping Bear is control," Vashet said calmly. "Right now, you are mine to do with as I wish. I can move you, or break you, or let you free."
Key claim: Sleeping Bear means control, equated with being skin-danced.u/Smurphilicious
  • It was like the whole of creation striking me through the flat of her hand
    Vashet's slap read as a hammer-blow echoing Tehlu and the Lanre-Selitos encounter.u/Smurphilicious
  • the tallest nail gets hammered down first.
Comment extends pattern: tall figures (Kirel, Rengen, Aaron, Tim) cluster around Tehlu and ironwork.u/chainsawx72
  • You throw a premise and a half out and then assert a conclusion without explaining how it is derived, which you then use as a premise for the next leap of faith.
CounterCounter: top comment charges the chain proceeds by unjustified leaps, not logical derivation.u/fleyinthesky
