Lyra Did Not Truly Die But Became the Cthaeh

fringe identity · popularity 108 · 1 source thread

Lanre's wife Lyra survived as the Cthaeh, linked through the Adem tale of Aethe and Rethe.

About: Lyra, The Cthaeh

Also involves: Haliax, Arliden's Lanre Song, The Adem, Shehyn, The Lethani, The Doors of Stone, Aethe and Rethe

The theory§

This theory proposes that Lanre's wife Lyra did not truly die but became, or was remade into, the Cthaeh. The direct textual hooks are slight: Lyra is remembered as 'terrible and wise,' wielding power as great as Lanre's, and Kvothe instinctively corrects himself to address the Cthaeh as 'Ma'am' after noticing the tree's flowers, with Rothfuss having confirmed the Cthaeh is a 'they.' The harder problem is Lanre's own statement that his wife is dead and her death on his hands, which the theory must explain as deceit, resurrection, or transformation. The stronger connective tissue identifies Lyra with Rethe from Shehyn's Adem tale of Aethe and Rethe, arguing that the same creation-war figures recur encoded across cultures, so that Lyra's true fate is preserved in Adem memory rather than in the Lanre song.

Evidence§

  • The **TL;DR** is **Lyra became the Cthaeh.**
States the core claim being argued.u/Kit-Carson
  • A singular, incongruous mention of Lyra being described as "terrible" _("Lyra was **terrible** and wise, and held a power just as great as [Lanre's]"
First textual hook: Lyra is described as terrible and powerful.u/Kit-Carson
  • When Kvothe first speaks to the Cthaeh he doesn't know how to address it _("'My apologies, sir,' I said earnestly. Then remembering the tree's flowers, I amended, 'Ma'am.'" … For the record, Pat has said [the Cthaeh is a "they."]
Second hook: Kvothe addresses the Cthaeh as female.u/Kit-Carson
  • The brilliance of OP's theory, I believe, is connecting Lyra and the Cthaeh through the characters of Aethe and Rethe … the etymology of Rethe's name, which does in fact mean "fierce," "cruel," "savage" and, yes, "terrible."
Connective tissue: links Lyra to Rethe via the Adem tale and name meaning.u/Kit-Carson
  • Lyra might very well be gone forever even if her consciousness lives on in the Cthaeh. … Lyra becoming whatever resides in the tree might have looked like dying to Lanre. Connecting Lyra's story with Rethe also suggests she did in fact die.
Addresses the contradiction that Lanre said Lyra was dead.u/Kit-Carson
  • If the Ctheah were simply the Ctheah, the exchange of Kvothe apologizing for misgendering the Ctheah ending with ma'am is meaningless. … The only "she," who is a mystery who would fit for all of the reasons you so eloquently listed, is Lyra.
Comment reinforces that the female gendering must point to Lyra.u/out_ofher_head
  • A culture like the Adem, and the spiritual leader that is Magwyn wouldn't just change their Genesis story for a bit of a better yarn. … Not here.
CounterCounter: the Adem recite tales too rigidly for Rethe to be a reshaped Lyra.u/bowiz2
  • I just don't see the deceit and treachery, even if I squint. I feel like we have to work hard to shoehorn it into that story.
CounterCounter: Aethe/Rethe argument lacks the deceit and treachery of Lanre's account.u/LNinefingers
